I just love this shot. It is so classically simple, maybe a bit understated, yet says so much to me personally because this shot just screams Gracie. To the average viewer, it might just be a simple profile of a very large dog. To me, it shows her gentle spirit, her submissive nature, her floppy lips, her ears which carry so much of her personality, and all the interesting ridges that make up her beautiful coat.
I took this shot yesterday and at about the same time received a really meaningful compliment about my work with dogs. I thought the shot and the compliment went hand in hand. They said:
"What I like most about your work is that you have the ability to capture the soul of the dogs. Their gestures, expressions, are surprisingly human."
That one meant a lot to me. It means that the way I feel about my subjects: compassion, understanding, love ... all of that is translating through a camera and a computer to someone halfway across the globe. What a gift.
I often wonder who she meets in her dreams.
Sometimes it is nice to shoot something different. I don't feel confined or pressured to post just my dog work. In fact, most dog photographers I know choose to shoot other subjects like product, weddings, or kids. That is the beauty of this industry.
In the spirit of change, I took on a last minute high school senior session this week (on the side of course) and thought I would share. I have to give him a hard time because his school photo is due on 11/1. Nothing like waiting until the last minute! What's funny is I was the same exact way in high school. I have always been a professional procrastinator.
We shot at my house. Totally fun. We chatted quite a bit and I found out that he is planning on going to culinary school next fall. I love that. It makes me happy when people pursue their passion.
This shot deserved its very own post because it is my personal favorite shot right now. My favorites change almost daily (sometimes hourly), but this one has stuck around for a few days, which means that it is now worthy of an enlargement.
I'm sure my husband will be really happy with yet another big photo of G-Money (another nickname).
Those lips are just absolutely smooshable! Look how they just drape over my hand. Muuuah!
How cool is this shot that my friend Ashley took of me last week in San Diego! I need to get the one that Deb took as well because it is straight on and my foot is cradling the sun. Niiiiccce.
This was down at Windansea Beach at sunset. Ingrid had just gotten off the rock from her materntiy shots and I headed up to do my own version and decided that it would be a good idea to get an action shot.
I briefly looked down to see where I would land but I don't think I realized how far up I was. I was more concerned with the waves. So when I did land, I landed on my booty in a little tidepool by the rock.
But it was totally worth it.
I was pleasantly surprised to get my lens 1 day early yesterday. Gotta love B+H Photo!
So I took it out and did a few shots of Miss Gracie. Clearly she was not amused. I had to crank the ISO up to 1600 because it was pouring so hard yesterday.
I, on the other hand, love this lens! It is the 15mm Fisheye and it is going to be a nice new tool to add really fun character to my dog portraits.
Isn't it flattering?
